No-Cost Meter Upgrades
As part of the Residential Solar Investment Program (RSIP), the Green Bank (a quasi-state agency) provided incentives for residential solar PV customers in Connecticut. To be eligible for these incentives, customers were required to have production meters (meter) included with each installation. Production meters are an essential component of solar PV installations because they help the Green Bank fund the program, and they benefit customers by allowing them to monitor the performance of their solar installations.
If you have been recently contacted by our meter upgrade partner, NovaSource Power Services, you may be eligible to receive a meter upgrade at no cost to you. Please work with NovaSource Power Services to arrange your appointment. If your meter is outside and accessible, you do not need to be home for the upgrade.
Q: Who is eligible to have their production meter upgraded at no cost?
A: Only customers recently selected and confirmed by the Green Bank are eligible for upgrades. Homeowners not selected can reach out to their original contractor or Third-Party System Owner to obtain a quote to have an RSIP approved revenue grade meter installed.
Q: Are these production meter upgrades free for customers who have leased a system through the Connecticut Solar Lease II (SL-2) program?
A: Yes.
Q: Are systems owned by third parties eligible for free production meter upgrades from the Green Bank?
A: No, except for SL-2 customers. If your solar PV system is owned by a third party, please contact them to confirm if your production meter is eligible for an upgrade. SL-2 customers will be able to take advantage of the production meter upgrades.
Q: Who will be changing my production meter, and who will I be coordinating with to arrange an appointment?
A: NovaSource Power Services, www.novasourcepower.com.
Q: Is there any way I can verify with the Green Bank the validity of the contractor?
A: Yes. The Green Bank has established an email address [email protected] which will be monitored by Green Bank staff during normal business hours.
Q: Do I need to be at home when a technician comes out to upgrade my meter?
A: If your production meter is inside the house or garage, you will likely need to be home to grant them access. If your production meter is outside the home, you may have the option to not be at home when the technician arrives. Technicians will be able to replace outside production meters without the customer on the premises.
Q: Will technicians show up unannounced?
A: If a technician is in your area, and your meter verified as outside and accessible, NovaSource Power Services may drop in to change your meter. They will leave a door hanger to notify you that your meter was upgraded.
Q: Will I need to shut my solar PV system down or turn off the power to my house to accommodate this work?
A: In some cases, a technician may elect to briefly shut off your system to perform the work but should not need to shut off the power to your house.
Q: Will these upgrades affect the production of my system or my electric bill?
A: No. The only difference you might see is the amount of production you will be tracking through your new production meter. If your previous meter had stopped working, it’s possible that you will be able see production data you were not seeing before. In cases where your previous meter was accurately logging data, you should not see any change.
Q: Can the selected contractor help me with other issues I might be having with my solar PV installation?
A: No. As required by the Green Bank, contractors are only permitted to perform the meter upgrades. If you are having issues with your installation, please contact your solar installer or an electrician of your choice.
Q: Will the meter upgrade affect the electricity supply to my home in any way?
A: No. Any device or appliance that uses electricity will continue to operate as before the upgrade.
Q: What if I have an Enphase meter that no longer communicates cellularly and I’d like to connect it to Wi-Fi?
