In 2018, Legrand was able to achieve a LEED Silver Certification through LEED Operations & Maintenance for Existing Buildings for its 90 year-old North American Headquarters building in West Hartford, CT. Through Arc, the digital performance platform that helps benchmark, measure and improve sustainability performance, the project team was able to utilize actual building performance data to achieve points toward LEED certification.

Panel Discussion: Pathways to Net Zero

- Matt Macunas, policy and outreach specialist for the Connecticut Green Bank
This panel will cover how companies in CT can benefit from new strategies to get to net-zero energy buildings and new finance programs that can support their zero energy efforts. Kai Starn from Steven Winter Associates will present the latest certifications tied to Net Zero Certifications, including the recently launched program from the USGBC, and Matt Macunas, from the CT Green Bank will outline the latest financing programs for new green buildings and infrastructure including state legislature updates, and new green bond options that are positioning CT to be among the first in the nation to adopt. Panel will be moderated by Legrand.
Julia Farber is the Sustainability Manager for Marketing and Research at Legrand, North and Central America. In her role, she creates opportunities to share the Legrand sustainability story throughout the corporation. A WELL-AP and a LEED Green Associate, Julia has been working in the green building and technology sectors for over 12 years, spending the majority of her experience working for Underwriters Laboratories, and as a sustainability advisor and consultant.
Kai Starn is a sustainability specialist at Steven Winter Associates (SWA) in Norwalk, Connecticut providing research, consulting, and advisory services to improve the built environment for private and public sector clients. With 12 years of experience with sustainability Programs and Certification, Kai helps engineers, architects, and owners develop processes, policies, and strategies to achieve high performance and healthy buildings. He has experience with operational and embodied energy analysis, in addition to other broader sustainability topics such as water, waste and recycling, climate resiliency, and land conservation and planning.
With over a dozen certified projects, Kai oversees both high-rise residential and a variety of commercial building typologies. He has project experience providing certification support for SITES and many LEED Building Design + Construction adaptations including Schools, Healthcare, Commercial Interior, Core + Shell, and Retail.
Kai holds a BS in Planning from the University of Vermont and volunteers on the CTGBC Green Schools Committee and community advocacy groups in Bridgeport such as Resilient Bridgeport.
Matt Macunas is a policy and outreach specialist for the Connecticut Green Bank, a quasi-public state agency that accelerates green energy adoption by making financing accessible and affordable. Matt serves as a liaison to state policymakers to usher policy proposals through the legislative process. He also helps lead the agency’s development of initiatives relating to electric vehicles. He has experience with political and grassroots campaigns, public relations, project management, and legal and regulatory analysis.
Matt was previously a Legislative Aide at the Connecticut General Assembly, serving as office manager, strategist, and spokesperson for multiple elected State Representatives. Through 12 years of election cycles, Matt has been a consultant to state and local political campaigns. He was also Senior Account Executive at public affairs firm Grossman Heinz, supporting clients with grassroots mobilization, executive searches, lobbying, and management consulting.
Matt holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Public Finance from the University of Connecticut, and volunteers as chairman of the West Hartford Conservation & Environment Commission.
